Environment
St Mary's has established a small group to co-ordinate it's commitment to protecting our environment.
The Footprint Group was established in 2006 and worked with the Diocesan Environmental Officer, Rev. Barry Goodwin to carry out an environmental audit to identify how well we were protecting the environment both as a church and as individuals.
We have worked on a range of projects including:
- Replacing standard light bulbs with energy saving bulbs
- Issuing a 'Harvest Challenge' to our congregation each year during our Harvest Festival. Challenges have included recycling ink cartridges, reading glasses and stamps, recycling paper and glass used in the church and office and selling fabric bags to encourage less use of carrier bags
- Establishing an eco-garden at the back of the church hall to re-vitalise waste ground that is currently not accessible to the community
- Sharing our experiences with other local faith groups, attending joint meetings and talking at conferences
Our latest project is to research a travel plan to encourage less use of cars and better use of sharing opportunities to travel together and use of public transport or cycling.
